Dear Brother/Sister:
As we reflect on the accomplishments of our great leaders that have gone before us, it is with entusiam that we continue to fight and acknowledge how labor plays a vital role. Asa Philip Randolp was not only a great labor leader but also an impotant civil rights forerunner. Mr. Randolph organized the Sleeping Car Porters in 1925 and went on to be one of the first African Americans to sit on the Executive Council of the AFL-CIO. He was instrumental in irganizing the 1963 MArch on Washington. The A. Philip Randolph Intitute (APRI) was founded in 1965 and was established as an organization of black trade unionists to fight for racial equality and economic justice. He continued to be a champion of civil rights until his death in 1979.
In his honor, the Greater Washington Chapter of the APRI will be hosting our 18th Annual Birthday Celebration. This year we will be honoring 2 Labor Leaders for their visionary leadership and dedicated service to the labor movement. Iur guest speaker will be Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO, Liz Shuler.
