APRI Florida: 11th Annual Asa Philip Randolph Memorial Birthday Celebration

The Florida A. Philip Randolph Institute, Inc. will host the Eleventh Annual Asa Philip Randolph Memorial Birthday Celebration, April 14, 2012, 7:00 p.m. at the Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Airport and Cruise Port Hotel, 1825 Griffin Rd, Dania, FL 33004. Cocktail reception 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Proceeds from the sponsorship will support statewide initiatives like The A. Philip Randolph High School of Technology, voter education efforts, organizing non-partisan Get-Out-To-Vote (GOTV) drives and programs of the State Chapter.

This event is our opportunity to spotlight outstanding contributions of community activists, labor leaders and elected officials who, like Mr. Randolph have made strides toward sustaining freedom, equality and worker rights. Human Rights Activist and supporters from across the nation will come together to celebrate the legacy of A. Philip Randolph, the “Messenger”.

The 2012 recipient of the Asa Philip Randolph Lifetime Achievement Award is Brother Daniel D. Reynolds, President of the National Federation of Public and Private Employees and The Broward County AFL-CIO, he has served as our visionary leader for workers around the country.

Mr. Reynolds is qualifications read like a novel. Dan comes to the Presidency after having served as the elected Secretary-Treasurer of the National Federation of Public & Private Employees since 1994. His work with the Federation of Public Employees began in 1985. In addition to his involvement with the Federation, he is the President of the Broward County AFL-CIO. Delegates representing over fifty local union affiliates elected him to that position in 1995.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a surgical technician during the early 1970’s. After leaving the Navy, he attended the University of Florida, and spent two years of directed study in economics at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland. While in Poland, he witnessed the birth and rise of the Solidarity trade union movement.

• Distinguished Legislative Service Award – Perry Thurston, Florida State Representative

• Champion of Labor Award – Walter Crosson, IBEW Local 759, Retired

• Eminence Award – Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, United States Congresswoman, District 20

• Distinguished Community Service Award – Nadine McCrea, President, Community Enhancement Collaboration, Inc.
